Greater Birmingham? NO! Coventry Should Join With Warwickshire, say Lib Dems

Birmingham Council House (City Hall)Plans by our Labour Council to merge Coventry into a West Midlands Authority based in Birmingham have been rejected by Liberal Democrats.

The Lib Dems believe that Coventry would be better off making an alliance with Warwickshire and possibly Solihull, rather than get sucked into a huge authority centred around Birmingham, in which Coventry's voice could well be lost or ignored.

Local Lib Dem campaigner and former Coventry Councillor, Russell Field, said:

"The Government are pushing for bigger authorities, headed by a directly elected Mayor, but I believe we have stronger economic and geographic links with Warwickshire than with Birmingham and the Black Country."

£250,000 on Promoting Authority

Russell was shocked that Coventry Council has spent a quarter of a million pounds on promoting the idea of the new Authority. He said:

"At a time of cuts, that's an awful lot of money to spend on publicity for such a bad idea."

Party Politics over Coventry's Future

"Labour have admitted they made this decision because they think their party has more chance of winning the Mayor election with Birmingham. This short sighted political decision ignores the needs of our City. Labour should be ashamed."
